When I was just starting out on my professional photography journey, I was putting out ‘Bat Signals’ asking for models to let me photograph them. One of my very first clients was the beautiful Tyler, and her adorable little pupper Ella. I LOVED our session together, and it was one of the first times I started to feel confident in my portrait photography.

Flash forward to this past summer- Tyler found out she was expecting a little one! She contacted me about scheduling a session in the fall when she was further along for a maternity shoot, and I was ecstatic! I couldn’t believe that a client that was essentially one of my guinea pigs starting out loved my work and trusted me enough to capture such a special time in their lives.

When Southeast Kansas began to shift into my favorite season and all the neon greens began to lift into luminous shades of gold, I knew that it would be the perfect time to capture Tyler’s sweet bump. We scheduled her session, I sent her the Google Maps pin to come meet me out in the middle of the country, and we were both extremely eager to photograph this momma to be!

Upon arriving at one of my favorite ‘secret locations’ out in the rural Columbus, Kansas area, we were awestruck by fields filled with small yellow native flowers. Willow-leaf sunflowers danced in the sunshine for us as we found the PERFECT location to showcase Tyler’s pregnant glow and sweet bump.

One of the goals of the photoshoot was to get some photos that made her baby bump the star of the show! I found a secluded area that had some AMAZING backlight, and we went to work on showing off the adorable belly. We chatted and had so much fun, and she shared some hilarious pregnancy stories throughout the whole shoot. Her little man even decided to show off his moves a little bit and was bopping around in her belly- It never ceases to amaze me that you can actually see the little babe doing the shimmy before they are even born!

We finished up her session just before sunset and caught some absolutely stunning light- I swear, sometimes the Kansas skies just like to gloat about how gorgeous they can get. The sun slowly sank down behind us over the gorgeous golden grasses. I kept exclaiming how beautiful the light was, and kept excitedly bouncing to and fro with my prime lens to capture the sunbeams before they disappeared.

Being able to capture these precious moments in people’s lives is exactly why I love doing what I do. The photographs I was able to get of Tyler are a beautiful tribute to her pregnancy, and I am certain she will look back at these fondly as the years pass and her baby boy grows older.
